- Weltweit werden jährlich mindestens 4,5 Billionen Stummel unsachgemäß entsorgt.
- In Wien sind es 868 Millionen.
- Filter besteht aus schwer abbaubaren Kunststoffacetat. Bis zur Verrottung: 10-15 Jahre
- Sie enthalten laut WHO bis zu 7000 verschiedene Chemikalien, wovon viele giftig für die Umwelt und mindestens 50 krebserregend sind.
- Aus einem Stummel können – beispielsweise durch Regen – Nikotin, Arsen, Blausäure, Blei, Chrom, Kupfer, Cadmium, Formaldehyd, Benzol und Polonium (radioaktiv!) in Böden und Gewässer gespült werden.
- Ein Stummel verunreinigt 40-60l Wasser.
- Für Fische ist eine Zigarette pro Liter Wasser tödlich (50 Prozent Sterberate).
- Ein weiteres Problem ist, dass Tiere und Kinder die Stummel mit Nahrung verwechseln können und es zum Tod kommen kann.
- Der Großteil aller Zigarettenmarken beinhaltet Hämoglobin aus Schweineblut im Filter.
- Für den Tabakanbau wird jährlich eine Fläche von 4.225 Fußballfeldern Wald gerodet. Die Pflanzen brauchen auch viel Dünger, was dem Boden und der Umwelt schadet.
Darüber hinaus wird viel Brennholz zum Trocknen der Blätter verbraucht – etwa ein Baum für 300 Zigaretten.
